Express Yourself

Assertive behavior is when you say what you feel and think what is good for yourself.  Telling someone what you feel and think can increase your confidence and give you better control of your life.  People will respect you more and relationships will improve.

Consider the following:

√          Tell people your thoughts and feelings clearly and honestly.  Say “I feel” or “I think” or “I would like”.  Don’t apologize for saying what think and never put yourself down.

√          Hold your head up, stand and sit straight in a relaxed way, make eye contact and match your facial expression to what you feel and say.

√          Speak clearly so that people can hear and understand you.

√          Learn how to say “No” to others and accept other people’s right to say “No” also.

√          Accept compliments and feel good about yourself.  Accept true criticisms and learn from them.

√          Be principled and live by that.  Respect yourself.

√          Lean how to say that you feel angry in a way that does not harm other people.

√          Do not be afraid to disagree with people.  If everyone is able to say what they think clearly and cooperate to find solutions everyone can “win” in the end.

Learn how to choose good friends.  We all want to be accepted in a group and one way of achieving this is to agree with its members and do what everyone does.  But be careful with what everyone is doing.  Pressure from your friends to behave like them can be very strong and difficult to resist.  However, if you stand up for yourself and with what you believe, people often respect you more and like you better.
